Lecture polling, for a hall where confusion and attention look identical

Two hundred faces angled towards the screen tell you nothing about whether the last twenty minutes landed. "Does that make sense?" makes it worse. The students who answer are the ones who understood, and their nodding becomes the evidence you use to move on. A student response system everyone can use at once, from the phones already in the hall, replaces the nodding with a count.

Why nobody puts a hand up in a class of three hundred

Admitting confusion in front of three hundred peers costs something immediate and personal. The benefit goes to everyone else in the room. And the students least able to judge whether their confusion is reasonable are the ones who are lost, so they stay quiet and assume it is only them. Silence in a lecture hall measures how expensive it is to speak, not how much has been understood. Ask everyone at once, with no name attached, and the question stops being a confession and becomes a count — one you can act on before the next concept goes on top.

Six polls across a fifty-minute lecture

Roughly: one at the start, one at each conceptual hinge, one in the back half where attention drops, and one at the door. The examples below come from an introductory statistics course. Swap in your own material, but keep the positions — that is where the sequence does its work.

    • The spread of the values in the sample
    • The spread of the sample mean across repeated samples
    • How far the sample mean sits from the true mean
    • The size of the mistakes made when recording data

    Today rests on last week, so check the foundation before you build. It also gets three hundred phones connected while nothing important depends on them yet.

  2. Step 2Multiple choice

    A study reports p = 0.03. What does that tell you?

    • There is a 3% chance the null hypothesis is true
    • If the null were true, data this extreme would turn up about 3% of the time
    • The finding would replicate in 97% of repeat studies
    • The effect is large enough to matter in practice

    Not scored, on purpose. Build the wrong answers out of the misconceptions you mark in exams every year, and the distribution tells you which of the four ways of being wrong is in the room.

  3. Step 3Rating

    Could you do that derivation on your own right now?

    Straight after the hardest ten minutes. Confidence is not comprehension, but a floor full of twos is the difference between a second worked example and moving on.

  4. Step 4Word cloud

    Which term from the last section could you not explain to a friend?

    Around the thirty-five minute mark, where attention thins. One word costs nothing to type, and the cloud names the vocabulary that never landed in about ten seconds.

  5. Step 5Open text

    What did you nearly ask, and then not ask?

    Open this one at the start and leave it running. The real question usually forms nine minutes after the moment has passed, by which point nobody is interrupting a hall to raise it.

  6. Step 6Ranking

    What should the revision session spend longest on?

    • Choosing the right test
    • Reading a confidence interval
    • Interpreting someone else's output
    • Writing up a result honestly

    Ends the hour with a decision rather than a mood. Ranking, not voting: four topics marked important is not a plan for a sixty-minute revision slot.

Running polls in a full hall

Ask before you explain, not after

A check run after the correction only measures who was listening to the correction. Put the question up cold, let the wrong answers sit on screen, then teach into them — the room now has a stake in which one was right.

Be willing to change the plan, or do not ask

If sixty per cent pick the misconception and you carry on to the next slide anyway, the students learn that the question was theatre. Say out loud what the result changed: another example, a slower pass, a topic moved to next week.

Watch the response count, not the clock

In a hall of three hundred the count climbs fast and then flattens. Closing on the plateau takes about forty seconds and does not punish the person still reading the fourth option; closing on a fixed timer does both jobs badly.

Keep the join code where a latecomer can find it

Put it on the title slide and again in a corner of the running deck. People arrive late, phones lock, and someone in row twenty decides at minute thirty that they do want to answer after all.

Never ask for a name

The moment answers can be traced they become performances, and the confident students answer twice as often as the confused ones. Anonymity is not a nicety here; it is the only reason the numbers mean anything.

Read the unasked questions out

Take the top two from the open question at the break and answer them without comment on who asked. A hall that hears a hesitant question treated seriously sends more of them next week.
