Live Q&A platform

Q&A is on from the moment your session starts. Tell the room it is there and questions arrive while you talk, with the room upvoting as they go. By the time one reaches you it belongs to fifty people, not one, which makes it much easier to ask and much harder to dodge.

Why nobody puts their hand up

Asking a pointed question in front of your manager costs something, and it costs one identifiable person. So it doesn't get asked. Writing it costs nothing, and voting for someone else's costs less than nothing.

How it works

On by default

Nothing to switch on. Anyone who has joined can type a question from the same phone, with no account and no app.

The room decides the order

Questions are upvoted. What rises is what most people wanted to know.

Everyone sees the same list

Questions and their vote counts update live on every phone, so nobody has to wonder whether theirs got through.

Mark them answered

Answered questions get a tick, so you can see what you have covered without losing your place.

Where to put it in your session

Q&A works best alongside a couple of questions of your own.

  1. Step 1Multiple choice

What did you come here hoping to hear about?

    • The roadmap
    • The reorg
    • Hiring
    • The numbers

Ask this first and point people at the Q&A while you do. Now you know the shape of the room before you start.

  2. Step 2Open text

Anything you'd rather ask before we finish?

A second door, near the end, for the question someone wrote and then deleted.

  3. Step 3Rating

Did you get an answer to the thing you came with?

The only measure of a Q&A that matters, and it takes the room five seconds.

Running it well

Say it's there in your first minute

It is already on, so the only thing that stops questions arriving is nobody knowing. Mention it early and they gather and get votes while you present.

Take the top one first

Even when it's uncomfortable. Skipping it is the fastest way to teach people not to bother.

Say when you can't answer

"I can't say yet" keeps the room with you. Silence reads as the question being unwelcome.
